NY-SEN: Senator Caroline Kennedy?

I’m SHOCKED, SHOCKED that this story which has spread like wildfire the past few hours has yet to be discussed on the site.

For those who haven’t heard, and according to Countdown Gov. Patterson just confirmed it, Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, has spoken to Gov. Patterson about being Hillary Clinton’s replacement.

I feel like with someone like her in the mix a lot of the things we said Patterson would look for like geography, race, gender kind of become secondary.

Not to necessarily take a position on this, but I just feel like it would be difficult for Patterson to choose someone like Brian Higgins or Tom Suozzo over Caroline Kennedy.

    Caroline Kennedy, the previously politics-shy daughter of JFK, has spoken to New York Gov. David Paterson about a possible appointment to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to Democratic insiders.

    It’s not clear when the pair spoke, but Kennedy, a high-profile supporter of Barack Obama during his primary battle against Clinton, apparently initiated the contact with the governor.

  6. HOW ABOUT SOMEONE WHO CAN DO A GOOD JOB?

    Let’s see.  I’ve read about 22 posts so far and NO ONE has discussed what qualifications, if any, Caroline Kennedy has to be a senator.

    Someone wanted reasons why she wouldn’t be a good pick.  Here’s several:

    1. There is ZERO evidence that she has any ability or willingness to work for the general public.

    2. She’s 51 years old and she has ZERO accomplishments as a public official — elective or administrative or anything else.

    3. I’m reading her bio as I’m writing this and it’s downright embarrassing.  I can’t even figure out what she’s been doing her whole life.  Her bio is a couple of graphs and is dominated by things like attending funeral services and “jobs” that are basically being on the Board of Directors of various foundations.  These are generally “jobs” that require close to no work.

    4.  What exactly are her ideas?  Has she ever even had a plan for helping people?  An issue she can discuss intelligently or passionately?  There is ZERO evidence of any of this.

    5.  New York has 26 Democrats in the House of Reps.  If these men and women aren’t capable of being good senators, they should be tossed out of office NOW.  I’m guessing that EVERY one of them would be better than Kennedy.

    6. I’ve seen her speak on television many times over the years.  She is not bright.

    7. It’s MORALLY OFFENSIVE to keep having members of political dynasties given a free pass to political office.  It is ANTI-DEMOCRATIC AND ANTI-AMERICAN.

    8.  The person appointed should be someone of MERIT, not a politically pleasing choice who is there because of her family members.

    What is wrong with you people?  Don’t you have any respect for hard work, proving yourself, picking yourself up from your bootstraps and advancing in life via merit rather than Daddy?

    I’m absolutely disgusted.

  7. I really have mixed feelings about this. Sure, it’s Caroline Kennedy. No, ideology isn’t a problem… Hell, she sat on the board for NAACP Legal Defense! Yeah, she’s a friend of Obama.

    However, it does seem odd that she may want to jump into Congress now. Why? She was never a high-profile political figure until she endorsed Obama. And what about all the other women & men being considered who actually have political experience? Carolyn Maloney? Nydia Velasquez? Someone else?

    So really, this is a dilemma for me. Caroline seems like a good person & a fine liberal Democrat. But is she the best choice for Senator?

  8. I think she has a lot of potential. My question is: is she ready for a grueling election campaign for her own office?
